Dog Walking Tips For The Busy City (Part 1)

from:

Don't Leave Your Puppy Unattended: One mistake that can prove quite disastrous is an owner leaving a puppy tethered outside while going into a cafe to buy a cup of coffee or into a store to buy a few groceries. How long does it take to steal a car? On the average it takes a good thief twenty to forty seconds. Think how much faster someone can steal your puppy. And it is even more tempting for thieves if your puppy is a pure breed.

An unattended puppy can also slip through his collar and run away. Also, you don't know how your puppy is going to react to being left alone. You don't know how people or the environment will treat your puppy in your absence. If you're not there, you can't help calm him if he becomes scared. Why turn an otherwise safe environment into a frightening one for your puppy?

Be Aware of the Weather: Watch for severe weather conditions before taking your puppy out for a walk. If the day is a real scorcher, then cut back the length of the walk. Pavement absorbs a lot of heat - this will make your puppy feel even more uncomfortable on a very hot day.

Also shorten the length of the walk if it is extremely cold outside. During the winter months, remember that salt can be painful on your puppy's paws. It's a wise idea to purchase a pair of booties to protect his paws during the winter.

Distractions: After walking your puppy for just a few feet down any city block, you will quickly become aware of the endless distractions that will be vying for your puppy's attention. Literally everything will interest your pup - the rustling sound of trees or bushes blowing in the wind; the odor of the earth; the scents on the sidewalk; pedestrians passing by; food and miscellaneous items discarded on the street; the wind blowing through your puppy's legs; and, of course, the myriad assortment of noises that can be heard in the city at any given time of the day.

Every sound, sight, and scent will be a new discovery for your puppy. All of this adds to an exciting adventure, and depending on your puppy's nature, he will either be full of enthusiastic curiosity or fear and timidity.

Using Motivators on a Walk: Because of the variety of distractions on any given street, you will find it necessary at times to bring his attention back to you. A great way to gain your puppy's attention at critical times is to have a motivator with you. The best motivator is one of his favorite toys. Not only is the toy acting as a motivator, but it also creates a spirit of playfulness. You want to create a sense of joy for your puppy. If you are fun inside the house, you should also be fun on the outside. The bond of security will deepen and your puppy will enjoy being outside with you. If your pup picks up a stick, then play with it on the walk; a stick is a perfect motivator while on a walk or in the park.
